Bronco Stadium Panorama
I had the pleasure of watching Boise State beat Louisiana Tech at Bronco Stadium last night. We sat in the South End Zone where the crowd was raucous.

Kid hates the Raiders
Honestly, I don't blame the poor kid. If Al Davis and the Raiders beat my favorite team I would throw a tantrum too. I can relate to the kid in two ways:
1. I cried when the 49ers lost to the Cowboys in the NFC Title game in 1993. It wasn't hysterical crying but the waterworks were flowing. I won't sugarcoat it, it was one of my more pathetic moments. My mom had to comfort her 13 year old son because the Cowboys had defeated Joe Montana and Jerry Rice.....hang on, I need a moment....

2. I get just as emotional as the young boy in the video every single time I look at Mark May's face. I scream at the TV just like the young boy does every time May opens his mouth about Boise State. Mark May is pure evil.

Player Profile-Doug Martin-Boise State
It's late at night. I can't sleep. I'm bored. I haven't blogged in a while. Let's go...
Doug Martin is the best college football player you've never heard of. If you're hearing his name for the first time - remember it. He's the starting tailback for the Boise State Broncos. He's about 5'10", 215 pounds, junior running back and he leads the league in awesomeness.
Why haven't you heard of him?
Doug Martin showed up at Boise State in 2007 ready to redshirt. There was a logjam as it is at the running back spot with D.J Harper and Jeremy Avery getting ready to play as true freshman. But most notably, Ian Johnson was suiting up for his junior year with the Broncos. Even as a redshirt, there were comments made by some anonymous players that Doug Martin (not Ian Johnson) was the best running back on the team.
In 2008, playing as a redshirt freshman, Doug Martin saw little time in the backfield due to the depth of the running back position. Ian Johnson was now a senior and DJ Harper and Jeremy Avery had proved themselves as worthy backups. Still Doug Martin impressed.
By the time 2009 rolled around Avery and Harper had established themselves in the offense. Ian Johnson was now gone but the coaches knew a player as talented as Doug Martin shouldn't be kept off the field. In the spring of 2009, Martin agreed to make a move to defense at a position called "nickelbacker", a hybrid position of a defensive back and linebacker. Winston Venable won the starting job but in the first couple games Doug Martin received valuable playing time in his new defensive role. In the third game of the season, DJ Harper tore his ACL against Fresno State. With depth now a concern at running back, the coaches had no choice but to have Martin return to offense to play his original position. The position he had played all his life until the 2009 season.
Doug Martin was already becoming a fan favorite before he was thrust back onto offense but his popularity among Bronco fans skyrocketed when we got our first real glimpse at would Dougie could do. For the rest of the season, Doug Martin split carries with starting running back, Jeremy Avery. In 2009, "Doug Mad, Doug Smash" ran for 765 yards and scored 15 touchdowns. On top of that, he averaged six yards per carry. After coming back to offense, the Doug Martin Hype Machine didn't disappoint. He punished defenders for the next 10 games. If you were in his way, you were ran over. If you gave him space, he ran around you.
In 2010, Doug Martin was named the starting running back despite Jeremy Avery being the starter in 2009 and running for over 1,100 yards. Doug Martin, now known as the "Muscle Hamster" (probably because of his 400 pound bench press) according to his teammates, has been stellar in 2010. Martin may not get feature back like carries because Boise State blows out so many opponents but there's no reason to fret.
Doug Martin will be around for a while. Once he's done playing on Saturdays, start looking for him on Sundays.

Warning: Proud Father Alert
April 17th was a day Eric, Timo, and myself had marked in our mental calendars for a couple months. This is the day of the annual Blue-Orange Spring game at Boise State. Prior to the scrimmage starting there were a lot of activities for the kids to do. The boys were able to participate in a football style obstacle course, get their pictures taken with the 2010 Fiesta Bowl trophy, play around in one of those inflatable playhouse thingies, and some other activities.
Quick Side Note: I badly and I mean BADLY want to go play inside one of those inflatable playhouses. I would just jump in there but there has to be some sort of weight limit. I don't need a bunch of pointing and laughing in my direction, especially from 9 year olds.
After a short time, the famed blue turf field was opened up to any kids 12 and under and they were able to participate in drills that the actual players do during practices. Parents weren't allowed on the actual field (so we wouldn't get in the way)but we were able to stand on the sidelines to watch. The best part was most of the players were involved with the drills. Eric and Timo went from drill to drill introducing themselves to certain players. Some of the players were Austin Pettis, Titus Young, Kyle Efaw, Kellen Moore, Brandyn Thompson, Jeron Johnson, Winston Venable, Kyle Brotzman, and several others. Eric doesn't have a shy bone in his body so he has no problem walking up to players and striking up conversations. Timo gladly followed Eric around with just as much enthusiasm.
Eric had a moment he'll never forget when he was mingling with Fiesta Bowl MVP Brandyn Thompson. I'm going to preface this short story by telling you I didn't actually see this happen so this is all according to Eric.
Anyway, when at Brandyn Thompson's station, Eric thew him a pass. Thompson caught the pass and stood there for a moment staring at Eric. Thompson then got the attention of some coaches who were nearby and said "you have to watch this kid throw." Eric gladly obliged and threw the ball a few more times for them. As far as I know, afterward the coaches told him good job and the boys moved on to their next drill. The humble part of me needs to remind you this is Eric's story so it's quite possible he wasn't throwing for actual "coaches." But as you know, it doesn't really matter because Eric impressed one of his favorite football players with some of his own football skills.
Eric was beaming after this happened. It was awesome. It's sort of funny because he's been working on technique throwing the ball lately. When holding the ball he knows, keep the ball high, keep your elbows low, step into the throw, thrust with your shoulders and hips, and follow through. After learning these fundamentals, his first big payoff was impressing one of his idols. Not bad.
Quick Side Note #2: Earlier that morning we were able to sign Eric up to play football this fall. As an 8 year old he's required to play flag football this year. Next year he'll move on to tackle. This will be Eric's first year and he is super excited. I know, because he reminds me every 10 minutes.
All right, onto the visual part of the blog. As always I was camera ready for this event.
This is the smoke-filled helmet the players run through before every home game. When we walked through the helmet Eric MADE Timo and I simulate the players' entrance into Bronco Stadium.

Eric isn't the only kid in the family with throwing skills. Check out Timo's form as he readies to heave this ball. I'm going to pretend that the guy behind him is some sort of scout.

I just thought this picture was funny because of the way Eric is looking at Austin Pettis. I can't say I blame him. According to cbs.com, Pettis is ranked as the #2 receiver in the country going into this fall season.
Eric and Timo waiting to get an autograph from Kicker/Punter Kyle Brotzman. If you watched the Fiesta Bowl you probably remember the "riddler" play when Brotzman faked the punt and threw the ball to Kyle Efaw for a 27 yard gain. That play gave the Broncos momentum that led to a game winning touchdown.
And of course, the boys just had to get their picture taken with Buster Bronco.
Quick Side Note #3: As you can see, I'm standing on the blue turf to take this picture. I just wanted to point out this my first time on the famous blue turf....legally. And I've been on it at least half a dozen other times. There's been a couple incidences where I went to the stadium, found an open gate and wandered on in only to have someone close the gate after I took the field. So yeah, I've had to hop the gate a couple times to get back out. One time my friends Justin and Nate were with me. Good times.
Now here's a couple short videos. In the first video we see Timo running the obstacle course with an over sized Bronco football helmet on his head. Be sure to listen for Timo's grunt as he tackles the dummy. After watching the video a couple times I've come up with the theory that Timo pretended to have trouble handling the ball just so that girl would come up and help him.

Afterwards, we finally watched the game. An estimated 12,000 people showed up to see the Broncos. It was an awesome day.

Boise State wins 2010 Fiesta Bowl!!!!!!
Wow.
Boise State once again proves they are a team to be reckoned with among the college football landscape.
I love how all the "experts" regularly pick against the Broncos in these big games. When will they learn their lesson?
I feel like I'm floating on air as I revel in another Fiesta Bowl win. Although, the gallon of water I drank during the game is still sending me to the bathroom every 10 minutes.
If you want more good news, Boise State returns 20 of 22 starters for next season. It couldn't come fast enough.
Congratulations to the Broncos!!!!!!!!!!!

Picture(s) of the Week: Boise State Football Edition
Yesterday Eric and I were fortunate enough to go to the Boise State-Idaho game, thanks to some online friends who hooked me up with some tickets. This was the first rivalry game I've attended and it was a blast! It was cute how the Idaho Vandals were coming into Bronco Stadium boasting a mediocre record. For the record, Boise State won 63-25.
I'm going to ignore any hyperbole I could easily come up with at this point and get on with the pictures.

I gasped in fear as All-American, Kyle Wilson lied on the turf far too long after a play. It turns out he was okay. He took a shot to that one place where guys don't like getting hit. You can refer to a similar incident here.
This is my favorite picture of the bunch. Austin Pettis caught four touchdowns on the day and this is just one of his sweet grabs. Too bad that pesky goal post is in the way. One more thing. Pettis may have the best hands I've ever seen...ever. Hyperbole doesn't apply here, I mean it.
It was good times. Eric and I both screamed wildly as we braved the cold weather. I badly wanted to post a picture a nice lady took of Eric and I but I look a bit too chubby in it. Maybe next time.

Picture(s) of the Week
My picture of the week feature is back in a big way. Yesterday, Eric and I were fortunate enough to attend the Boise State game. Thank you guy from craigslist for selling your tickets crazy cheap! I took almost 200 pictures and videos while at the game. There's no way I'm narrowing down to one picture for this post. Today I have several and I was still picky.
We were lucky enough to get end zone seats, meaning we were very very close to the field. There's a certain responsibility that comes with sitting in the end zone bleachers. You guessed it. You have to make as much noise as insanely and humanly possible when the other team has the ball, especially when they are close to you. I tried explaining this concept to Eric before the game. I told him how when we're at home I'm always asking him and his brothers to be quiet. He agreed. I then told him this is his chance to be absolutely as loud as possible. Our goal was to have sore throats by the time we were done. I can proudly tell you as I type this more than 24 hours after the game has ended my throat is still soar and my voice is a bit raspy still. (Click Picture to Enlarge!)
We had the help of a horn to make extra noise during the game. Eric is practicing his horn blowing skills while waiting to get into Bronco Stadium.
As I mentioned we were able to score some good seats. I'm not even zooming in on this picture! Unfortunately, if you've noticed, the Broncos are getting ready to punt. Rats!

If I would have been forced to use one picture for this post, this one would be it. It's clearly my favorite. Boise State's defense was dominant once again forcing Miami (Ohio) to punt several times. In the background you can see Miami's long snapper and punter ready to kick the ball in our direction. Kyle Wilson (in the foreground), one of the nation's most dangerous punt returners waits for the ball. Although Kyle Wilson was contained returning punts in this game, he also has the reputation as one of the best cornerbacks in the country, often shutting down his side of the field for the opposing offense.
Boise State usually comes up with harebrained color scheme ideas for fans at Bronco Stadium. Last week some sections of the crowd wore blue, other sections orange, and other sections white. When done correctly it looks cool for the television audience but it can get complicated for every fan to remember instructions on what color to wear on game day. Yesterdays color scheme was simple. It was a "white-out." Actually it looked pretty cool as you can see here.
They say Kellen Moore has "ice in his veins." Here's proof that's true. As the pocket around Moore collapses, he stays cool while he winds up and delivers a pass under pressure.
By the fourth quarter the Broncos had mostly taken care of business. Mike Coughlin comes in as the backup signal caller to get some needed reps. If you enlarge the picture you can see Coughlin looking up at the play clock making sure he gets the snap in time.
Towards the end of the game we were able to sneak up to the wall to watch the rest of the game. You can almost see the game through Eric's eyes right here.
Our ears may have been ringing but after the Broncos dismantled the RedHawks 48-0, Eric and I were all smiles!

Quick thoughts on the game
I thought I would follow up yesterday's post with a quick personal post game update. I'll spare any boring details of analysis and give a few short opinions. I will do my best to avoid talking about LeGarrette Blount's post game meltdown.
I get all giddy when I think of the potential of this years team. Coach Pete will keep the players grounded. Can't wait till next week when Miami (Ohio), (alma mater of Ben Roethlisberger) comes to town. Bring on the Red Falcons!
- Boise State's defense is stellar. They shut down a high-octane Oregon offense. I feel warm and fuzzy inside just thinking about it.
- Boise State's offense was good when they weren't fumbling the ball. Once the screws are tightened they'll be explosive as ever with an improved running game.
- Despite Boise State's reputation of having a gimmick offense, BSU looked stronger and many times looked faster. For what it's worth, BSU has six players that run a 4.3. I remember University of Florida (a team that takes pride in recruiting speedsters) boasting a similar statistic last year.
- Becka made mouth watering buffalo wings last night and eating them before the game started was the route to go. Too many times my pregame butterflies has got the best of me with a big plate of untouched food in front of me.

The day has finally arrived
It's September 3rd. Do you know what that means? I've had this day etched in my brain for the last nine months. Boise State football kicks off their season today. Hang on a sec, allow me to scream.
WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
That feels better. This day couldn't come soon enough and now that it is here, I'm a nervous wreck. Boise State starts the season against the Oregon Ducks right here on the blue turf. This game has basically been billed as the biggest game in Bronco Stadium. If the Broncos lose, "the experts" say there's no shot at a BCS bowl for Boise State. No pressure right? So, I sit here in a sweaty panic. I doubt I'll be able to eat Becka's world famous buffalo wings tonight. Let's forget the hype for a few minutes and bring focus to what's really going on here. Boise is a football town. I've been a Bronco fan for 10 years or so, but since we moved here six years ago, I exchanged my red blood for blue and orange blood. This is the majority of football fans in Boise, affectionately known as Bronco Nation. There's that buzz in the air around the city. Hundreds of cars proudly fly their Boise State flags in their car windows, businesses wish the Broncos luck on their marquees, and even a car dealership in Nampa created a message of their own with cash for clunkers cars.
Ahh yes. All is right in the world again between September and January. During that time food tastes better, the winter air is warmer, the blue turf is bluer, my kids are cuter, I even take less happy pills because I'm generally happier.
I'm taking it in. I'm excited for the rest of the season. September 3rd, I've been waiting for you for nine long months and you're finally here. I'm hungry for roasted duck.

That feels better. This day couldn't come soon enough and now that it is here, I'm a nervous wreck. Boise State starts the season against the Oregon Ducks right here on the blue turf. This game has basically been billed as the biggest game in Bronco Stadium. If the Broncos lose, "the experts" say there's no shot at a BCS bowl for Boise State. No pressure right? So, I sit here in a sweaty panic. I doubt I'll be able to eat Becka's world famous buffalo wings tonight. Picture of the Week
This whole Picture of the Week theme has really caught fire. Jeremy's Forum is already receiving all sorts of accolades for being so freakin' awesome!
What's that? Oh...I'm dreaming again. Dang. Well, on with picture of the week.
Last Thursday, the Boise State Football team had their first scrimmage of fall camp. Even though our Jeep was broke down on Thursday, Becka and I showed our true dedication and support to Boise State by packing up our entire family, walking two and a half miles to the bus stop and riding the bus to Boise. Of course when we got back to Nampa, it was another two and a half mile walk home. A five mile walk is easy, but a five mile walk with a 35 pound kid on your shoulders in the summer heat is another story. No matter what, it was worth it and we all had fun.

While at the scrimmage I had my camera in hand with fully charged batteries ready to capture some action. I came away with some decent shots.

There's nothing really special about this picture other than, if you notice the tackler, his helmet is popping off. I didn't even see that in the picture until it was uploaded on the computer.
Wide Receiver, Aaron Burks broke away from the defense temporarily for a long play, until some defenders almost caught up to him causing Burks to make a leap into the end zone. You can see from this action shot, Burks crossed the plain with the football. Burks is one of those kids who graduated high school a semester early just so he could start college a semester early, thus joining the football team early. This helps give freshman a one up on the other freshman that don't join the team until several months later. This is becoming more of a regular trend in college football, including Boise State.
This picture of Titus Young running the football is my favorite. Young has crazy fast speed as you can see here as he blazes past other players including number 16, Cedric Febis, a local product (via the Netherlands) from Bishop Kelly High School in Boise. Titus Young missed most of last season. Us Bronco fans are straight giddy to have him back.
That's it for this week. Boise State scrimmages again this Friday, so prepare your retinas for the possibility of more blue turf pictures next week. But then again, who knows, maybe I'll get a picture of a rainbow, or maybe a person with an arm growing out their head.

Boise State Football scrimmage number two
Yesterday we went to Boise State's second scrimmage of spring ball. It was fun even in the rain. In football, rain is just part of the experience.
Here's head coach Chris Petersen. Petersen is a coveted coach all around the country. In Boise, he's a big celebrity. When Eric and I went to the NCAA basketball games last month we seen "Coach Pete" walking in the narrow corridor of Taco Bell Arena. It was halftime so it was very crowded. China train station type crowded. Anyway, he we was about two feet away from me when I noticed him and I blurted out, "Eric it's Chris Petersen!!!" Someone else already had his attention, but I felt slightly embarrassed since I squealed like a teenager at a Elvis Presley concert.

Back-up quarterback Drew Hawkins (son of Colorado head coach Dan Hawkins) takes a snap from the shotgun.
On the same play, Hawkins uses his running ability to scramble for a 27 yard touchdown.
There were a couple thousand people who attended the scrimmage. Everyone sat on the west side of Bronco Stadium except these few loners on the east side.
Now we're headed home. As the scrimmage ends, rush hour conveniently begins.

Scimmage pictures
Even with the NCAA basketball tournament in town, spring football at Boise State is gathering its usual attention. Today, was the first of three scimmages for spring football. Of course I was in attendance, and even came away with some decent pictures.

50 posts!!
Welcome to my 50th post since joining blogger! Ah yes, today is a day I celebrate doing something at least 50 times without getting bored and moving on. There is hope for me yet!
Posting 50 times is an infant number compared to most of the blogs I follow. For me, committing to something this long is a large accomplishment. A few months ago I attempted to run a second blog about one of my most favorite things in the world, Boise State Football. I easily burned out and had to cancel it. This is a good thing because I enjoy this blog more. Plus there's a lot less research involved when writing Jeremy's Forum.
I'm not sure how to celebrate this monumental occasion yet. I'm definately watching The Office tonight. I am getting hungry. That sounds like a good start...

BREAKING NEWS!!!
As a fellow Bronco Blogger has put it, "the most important decision in the history of the world", has finally been made.
After months and months of speculation, practices, and heated competition, the Boise State Broncos have finally decided on a starting quarterback. I introduce to you (drumroll sound inserted here):
Kellen Moore
For the first time in Bronco history, Boise State is going to start a freshman quarterback. Moore is a redshirt freshman. After the season ended this past January there was an open competition between 4 QBs for the starting quarterback position. After spring ball concluded the two front runners were Bush Hamden, a fifth year senior and of course Moore, a redshirt freshman.
After spring ball ended I was hoping for Kellen Moore to get the starting nod. I really like Bush Hamden, but like I said he's a senior, meaning there would be another quarterback competition next year, making it three years in a row. I'm happy to report this will not be the case. If all goes well, Moore will be behind center for the next four years, hopefully building another BCS team in the meantime.
You may be asking, can a freshman really lead this team? He absolutely can, I assure you. Here's some of his stats from high school I got from The Idaho Statesman:
"He was the Gatorade Player of the Year in Washington after setting career records for completions (787) and touchdown passes (173) and single-season records for touchdown passes (67 as a senior), passing yards (4,600 as a junior) and completions (317 as a junior)."
Yeah, those are playstation numbers. I had a chance to watch two public scrimmages during fall camp and felt more confidence after each one that Moore should be the starter. He's very smooth with a natural feel for the game. The left hander makes the offense flow very well. He seems to not get rattled even when under pressure or after throwing an interception. Those are attributes that can't really be taught. Also, learning the Bronco playbook so well after only one season as a redshirt is quite impressive (Boise State runs almost a 1,000 different plays). Coach Peterson said of Moore that he's already "setting new standards" when it comes to watching game film. Knowing that he's a freshman makes it even more impressive.
I'm sure he'll do a great job, but if for some reason it doesn't work out for him it's a good feeling to know there are some great quarterbacks behind him just dying at an opportunity to play. I've seen them all play, and they've all done a very good job. I just happen to think Moore can be a special player. It makes me even "Moore" excited for the season to "kick" off. Haha, sorry, I couldn't help it.
I know he'll make his hometown of Prosser, Washington proud and certainly the city of Boise.
Maybe there's too much hype already, but I'm sure he can handle it. That's what good quarterbacks do, thrive under pressure.
